Hartford Advocate October 14, 2004 by Dan Barry When Librarians Rock (excerpted from an article about the Hatestick Appleseed LP release show at Arch St. Tavern which can be found in its entirety here) Speaking of democracy, I think libraries are about as democratic as it gets. And with her thick glasses and her long hair down, Lys Guillorn is the alter ego I always daydreamed my librarian had at night. She's a singer-songwriter! She's the leader of a rock band! She's an English major! And she has a killer, killer voice. She opened for Hatestick at Arch Street Tavern on Friday night with a full band in tow, and despite some occasional tech problems, she presented a mesmerizing set. She played several songs off of her self-titled LP, but the surly twang of "Counterproductive" was a standout. Guillorn is an incredible lyricist, with lines ranging from the brilliantly compact to the downright poetic ("the raveled sleeve of care / knits itself again," from "In Sleep"). Look them up on her website -- they're as much of a treat to read about as they are to hear live. |
