Collected Sounds July 2003

"Lys Guillorn" by Lys Guillorn

Lys Guillorn makes music that sounds intriguingly old-time while still having a new slant to it. It's rooted in folk and has echoes of country and rock.

"Legendary Cowboys" is as country as you'd expect from the title. Lys Guillorn's voice is beautifully expressive and her guitar speaks volumes.

"Counterproductive" is an old-time blues number with Lightnin' Hopkins voice sampled to give it that extra edge. Guillorn's voice is not bluesy but dreamy, but her guitar is in tune with the tradition.

"Little Wren" features Dean Wareham from Luna. It slides forward like a dark lullaby with bell-like vocals.

"Throne" is a touching song. Its stately beauty belies the sad words.

The cover of Johnny Thunders aching "You Can't Put Your Arms Round a Memory" works fine.

On the whole this debut is a strong calling card and should appeal to people who like the Cowboy Junkies and other good bands of that ilk.
